Assist shelves

Love Free Shelves but can't start them?  There are many other ways to help.

Volunteer as a "shelf elf."

Every set of Free Shelves needs a few "shelf elves" who help keep the shelves orderly.  As an elf, you would volunteer to visit the shelves regularly to remove any trash, including broken or unusable items.  Or you could volunteer to bring useful items elsewhere, as needed.

For instance, on Linwood St. one elf regularly bags up any clothes abandoned on the shelves and the group "Helpsy" picks up the bags from her driveway.  Another elf brings useable electronics that no one is taking to the town's Swap Shed.  Interested?  You can contact the host of whatever shelves you want to assist, or simply start helping.  Remove items that would be damaged (e.g., clothing, electronics, magazines) if it might rain/snow within the week and put elsewhere where it could be used.  Your cleanup and organizing will be appreciated!

Volunteer as a "gatherer."

When you see useful small items left on the curb for trash pick up, take them instead to Free Shelves.  You could let your friends and neighbors know you're available to bring items to Free Shelves, and create a spot where they might leave items for you.
